About

Welcome to Trekking Thru Hobbit Holes! Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Maribeth. I am a 26-year-old Christian author and homeschool graduate living a small-town Southern life. I’ve been writing since I was 5 years old, I’m a recovering people pleaser, I’m the oldest of nine kids (yep, you read that right), and I’m a nerdy fangirl. I can (and will) wax just as eloquently about Queen Victoria, Anne Boleyn, and World War II as I will for Star Trek, The Lord of the Rings, Doctor Who, and superhero movies.

After writing for six years on my old blog (which is now archived here), I decided it was time I started a new one where I focused more deliberately on my real blogging passion: reviewing movies, books, television, and even the occasional musical/album from a Christian worldview. I love movies, and I love to read. But I also grew up in a home where entertainment was used not for mindless consumption, but for learning and for honing the skill of discernment.

That certainly didn’t mean we couldn’t enjoy the entertainment side of it! Not at all. (Believe me: I had a crush on Aragorn son of Arathorn, Heir of Isildur and King of Gondor from a very young age–I knew how to enjoy those Tolkien movies.) But it did mean that my siblings and I were encouraged to watch movies, read books, and listen to music with our brains turned on, always aware that not every message is a good one…but also aware that we could glean so many good things from that entertainment as well.

Albert Einstein wrote, “If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales.” And as Neil Gaiman also wrote (though it’s often misattributed to G.K. Chesterton), “Fairy tales are more than true – not because they tell us dragons exist, but because they tell us dragons can be beaten.” Stories are so, so important–which is why I absolutely love picking them apart, sharing great ones with my friends and family….and even writing a few of my own.

So that’s what this blog is about: picking the stories apart, fangirling over the really really good ones (we can’t really help that, can we?), sharing progress reports on my upcoming novel Lionhearted, and the occasional life update. I hope you enjoy your stay!
